We’re transforming the Interislander to be kinder on our environment and create an experience that will be on every traveller’s ‘must do’ list and every customer’s most loved list…

The Cook Strait crossing is a vital part of New Zealand’s transport and tourism infrastructure.

So, it makes sense that the service matches its significance.

The current ferries have seen better days and need to be replaced to service the next generation and contribute to our zero-carbon future. That’s why we’re transforming the Interislander, upgrading the existing service to create a world-class Aotearoa experience.

This includes two new custom-designed ferries and terminals at Kaiwharawhara in Wellington and Waitohi Picton, which will increase capacity and efficiency, and improve the Interislander experience.

Through the iReX project, KiwiRail will provide faster, safer, more enjoyable Te Moana o Raukawakawa (Cook Strait) journeys for everyone – and all with less environmental impact.

This investment will turn an ordinary trip into a safe, seamless, and spectacular journey. It will benefit our environment, our communities, and our country. And it will be something we can all enjoy and be proud of, long into the future.

Together, we will create an iconic Aotearoa travel experience.

Join us on the journey.
